Anett Kontaveit shows empathy for Ons Jabeur following Sydney clash

World No. 7 Anett Kontaveit hopes Ons Jabeur's injury isn't that serious and that the Tunisian will be ready for the Australian Open. Kontaveit, seeded at No. 4, won the first set 6-4 before world No. 10 Jabeur retired due to a lower back injury.

"I really hope that Ons is going to be fine for next week and that it's nothing too serious," Kontaveit said, per the WTA website. "The first set was really competitive and we've had some tough matches before, but she's always come on top.

I was really happy to get the set and that I was playing the way I was playing."

Kontaveit, Jabeur respect each other

Before the match, Jabeur spoke extremely highly of Kontaveit. "Anett is a great player. We had our moments last year.

I told her, 'You're obsessed with me, you always follow me, so stop. (smiling) But it's great to have her on tour. She's a tough player. Even the matches we played against each other were always tough. ... I know the pressure is on me, not really on her.

But maybe some payback for last year," Jabeur said before the match. Kontaveit will be battling world No. 4 Barbora Krejcikova for a place in the Sydney final. Kontaveit and Krejcikova are set to meet for the second time in their respective careers.

Kontaveit beat Krejcikova in their lone meeting at this past WTA Finals in Guadalajara. "It's definitely going to be a tough match. She's playing great. She's had good wins," Kontaveit said. "The season is so early on.

Last time we played was the end of the season. It was different conditions, of course. "I'm really looking forward to the challenge to play another Top 10 player. I'm glad to be putting myself in these situations and getting good matches and getting quality time on court."
