Belinda Bencic still feeling effects of virus

Former world No. 4 Belinda Bencic admitted she is still feeling the effects of COVID-19. Bencic played at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship last month, where she lost to Ons Jabeur. After returning home, Bencic tested positive for COVID-19.

"I mean, my pulse was getting very up in the practices and even after Sydney, after the (Paula) Badosa match, I was very, very tired, and the breathing and everything," Bencic said after overcoming Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-3 at Melbourne Park, per France24.

"I think it's getting better day by day."

Bencic's recovery from COVID-19 was slow

"Definitely for my tennis, it's more the thing that I didn't practise for 14 days in the middle of the pre-season," she said. "But for my fitness, it's actually worse because I don't want to say I had it very bad.

Obviously not compared to people getting hospitalised and having worse symptoms, but it wasn't easy. "My fitness definitely was very off and I had to take it very slow getting back because obviously you have to do all the tests on the heart, lungs, everything, and you cannot start too quickly to just avoid any risks." Bencic was experiencing 'quite severe sympoms.'

"Hi everyone, I just wanted to provide a quick update that unfortunately and even though I'm fully vaccinated, I recently tested positive for COVID-19. I'm currently isolating and taking all precautionary measurements to get through this as best as possible as I'm experiencing quite severe symptoms /fever, aches, chills).

While the timing is not ideal - as i was in the final stages of my preparations for the Australian Open swing -- I will make my way to Australia as soon as I'm cleared and past the isolation period," Bencic announced on December 21.
