Matt Reid recalls his days on Tour with Nick Kyrgios

Australia's Matt Reid recalled his days on the Tour with Nick Kyrgios as he admitted those times were pretty exciting but also stressful. In 2017, Kyrgios asked Reid if he would travel with him as his coach. Also, Kyrgios promised Reid they would play doubles together where possible.

During his interview with The First Serve, Reid was asked about his time with Kyrgios. “He asked for me to come on as his coach but I saw it more as a friends type role. I didn’t tell him much anyway. I got to see a different side of tennis rather than the challengers and the futures.

That’s when I saw how good the tour can be,” Reid said of his time with Kyrgios. “I always say it’s the most exciting two years of my life. Although it was pretty stressful too”.

Kyrgios off to a good start at the Australian Open

On Tuesday, Kyrgios saw off Liam Broady 6-4 6-4 6-3 to reach the Australian Open second round.

It was Kyrgios' first match of the season as a positive COVID-19 test forced him to pull out of Sydney last week. “Obviously hearing the news I was positive, I knew what that was going to lead to, the week of quarantine, and not having the ideal preparation, not getting the physio, not getting the treatment,” said Kyrgios.

“I’m pretty pleased with the way I responded. It was a pretty flawless, everything I could control, serving, attitude, all the non-negotiables, I did great”. Kyrgios plays next world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev. “It’s going to be a hell of an experience for me.

You know, he’s probably the best player in the world at the moment. So I’m pretty excited, I’m excited for that moment,” said Kyrgios of the recent US Open champion. “That’s why I play the game. I feel like those matches still excite me, to go out there and play the best in the world”.
