Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina says she and Gael Monfils have a happy marriage and enjoy each other’s company. Last year, Svitolina and Monfils tied the knot. Though both Svitolina and Monfils are professional tennis players, there are times when they want to speak and do things not related to tennis.
"We are still practising sometimes together,” Svitolina told reporters, per Tennis Majors. “We are talking about tennis sometimes. Sometimes trying not to talk too much about tennis. I mean, for tennis nothing really changed.
But I think personally [marriage] connected us even more. We had amazing wedding in a way that all our families were together. It’s very rare for a tennis player to see whole family together because my parents, they in Ukraine.
His parents in France, Guadeloupe, Martinique. Everyone is everywhere. In that day was really special that we saw everyone at one venue. We were super happy with how the event went. Was very special for both of us”.
Monfils gave credit to Svitolina
After winning Adelaide in the opening week of the season, Monfils thanked Svitolina for being there for him when he lost faith in his tennis.
Monfils started 2021 with three consecutive losses and it was a rough year for him. “Last year was very tough for me. I almost, let's not say want to quit, but lost my faith in tennis. But Elina (Svitolina) was there.
Thank you Elina, thank you for everything," Monfils said after winning Adelaide. Before winning Adelaide, Monfils said the only positive thing from 2021 was his marriage to Svitolina. “The only positive thing I take away from 2021 is my marriage.
Truly a bad year, a horrible year. I don't even have a word. I'm forgetting it this year. From mid-2020 to 2021, that no longer exists for me," Monfils admitted. Meanwhile, both Monfils and Svitolina have been through to the Australian Open third round.
