Marin Cilic: I was aggressive because that's the only way against the top players

Marin Cilic was absolutely thrilled after stunning Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open. Cilic delivered a strong performance on Margaret Court Arena as he overcame Rublev 7-5 7-6 (3) 3-6 6-3 to reach the Australian Open round-of.16.

Cilic beat Rublev when they met for the first time in Geneva in 2015. After that, Rublev claimed five consecutive wins over Cilic. On Saturday, Cilic beat Rublev for the first time since 2015. “It is incredible,” Cilic said in his on-court interview, per the ATP website.

“I enjoyed every single second of the match. Andrey is an incredible player, we have played several times in the past and it is always difficult. I had so much fun and played great tennis.

The aggressive approach paid off for Cilic

Cilic wasn't backing down to Rublev and it paid off as he surprised Rublev.

“In the evening it is a little bit cooler, so you can go for a bit more on your shots and it really went well for me. I served great and that is the way to go against the guys at the top. If you are giving them a chance to hit, you will have trouble, so I was trying to be aggressive and it paid off," Cilic added.

Cilic plays Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Australian Open round-of-16 but after the match he was asked about Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner. "Berrettini and Sinner are two incredible players. They are coming off fantastic seasons, it is difficult to choose one of them.

Matteo is solid and serves very well, Jannik is still growing. Who will do better? Ask them, I don't have an idea," Cilic said, per Luca Fiorino. Cilic knows what it takes to make a deep run at Melbourne Park as he reached the final at the tournament in 2018. It remains to be seen if Cilic can beat Auger-Aliassime and make the quarterfinal.
