Denis Shapovalov: It was weird when Steve Nash told me he was a big fan of mine

Canadian tennis star Denis Shapovalov revealed he felt a bit weird after former NBA star Steve Nash told him he was a big fan of his tennis. Nash, who is now the head of the Brooklyn Nets, is a Canadian basketball legend.

Nash follows tennis and he is a big fan of 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist Shapovalov. During the latest ‘Last Time’ Q&A with the ATP website, Shapovalov was asked when was the last time he met one of his idols.

"Steve Nash. I met him in San Diego [during the tournament last year]. He was doing an exhibition and he was running into the club, so I got to meet him for a minute or two. That was really, really cool," Shapovalov told the ATP website.

"He said he was a big fan of mine, which was really weird to hear because I am a big fan of his. He is an icon in Canada and basketball. He is very well known in Canada and well looked up to."

Shapovalov roots for the Toronto Raptors

Also, Shapovalov was asked when was the last time he watched a sporting event live.

"The Toronto Raptors when they were playing in Tampa [Florida]. It is tough to follow when I am in Europe, but I definitely follow the Raptors and the Toronto Maple Leafs as much as possible," Shapovalov said. Meanwhile, Shapovalov pulled off a stunning win on Sunday at Melbourne Park.

Shapovalov saw off world No. 3 Alexander Zverev in straight sets to set up an Australian Open quarterfinal against Rafael Nadal. “I think off the ground I was playing really well, really feeling my shots off both wings,” said Shapovalov.

“I played pretty smart today, it felt like things were going my way early on. I lost a little bit of momentum mid-way in the second set but fought well to come back and just kind of rolled with it after”.
