Nick Kyrgios: Winning the Australian Open a dream come true

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios admitted winning the Australian Open was a "dream come true" for him. Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis delivered a strong performance in the Australian Open doubles final as they beat fellow Australian duo Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell 7-5 6-4 to win their maiden Grand Slam title.

Kyrgios and Kokkinakis have been close friends for years and the tournament organizers decided to give them a wildcard for the event. Kyrgios and Kokkinakis didn't disappoint as they ended up taking the main prize home.

“This week has been a dream come true for me and I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else,” Kyrgios said.

Kyrgios, Kokkinakis didn't expect to win

After the win, Kokkinakis admitted he and Kyrgios surprised themselves by winning it all.

“I can honestly say we didn’t expect to come close to this. But the coverage it got and the support for us is amazing, we couldn’t ask for anything more,” Kokkinakis said post-match. “Coming into the Australian Open I was already crazy happy and this is the cherry on the top”.

Ebden and Purcell fell just short of winning it all but Ebden was glad with the campaign they had. “We’ve had a great couple of weeks, some tough matches along the way, we got through some good pairs,” Ebden said.

“I didn’t think we did all that much wrong tonight, but these boys were really good”. Purcell tried to remain in positive spirits after the loss as he is hoping more good results will follow with Ebden.

“Hopefully we can see you guys team up on the doubles court because it’s a hell of a lot of fun to see you guys play,” he said. “For us this is our second tournament together and we’ve got a trophy so I can’t wait to keep playing with Matty”.
