Jo-Wilfried Tsonga: I hope to find a level where I can again beat great players

Former world No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was glad he started his Montpellier campaign with a win as his goal is to return to the level where he wants to be and put himself in position to be able to beat good players. Tsonga, now ranked at No.

259 in the world, entered Montpellier by using a protected ranking. On Tuesday, Tsonga saw off world No. 172 Kacper Zuk 6-4 6-4 to reach the Montpellier round-of-16. "It was a goal for me to get here and put some intensity from the 1st point," Tsonga said, according the tournament's Twitter account.

It was Tsonga's first ATP win since the March of 2021. "For me, the goal is to regain pleasure, to find a level where I can again beat great players," Tsonga added.

Tsonga sets up a Filip Krajinovic match

Tsonga made a positive start to the match, having won the opening three games.

However, Tsonga's lead was short-lived as Zuk broke back the Frenchman in the second game. No more break points were seen until the 10th game, when Tsonga realized his first set point on Zuk's serve to win the first set.

Zuk had a chance to start the second set with a break but failed to convert a break point in the opening game. Tsonga was the next to have a break point but missed out on a chance to break Zuk in the sixth game. Tsonga failed to convert any of his five break point chances in the eighth game but also saved three consecutive break points in the ninth game.

Zuk never recovered from blowing three consecutive break points in the ninth game as Tsonga broke the Pole in the 10th game to seal a straight-set win. Tsonga plays Krajinovic next, who beat Alexei Popyrin in the first round.

Tsonga and Krajinovic will be going head-to-head for the second time in their respective careers when they meet in Montpellier. Krajinovic beat Tsonga when they met in the Davis Cup three years ago.
