Taylor Fritz speaks about his love and admiration for Juan Martin del Potro.

American tennis star Taylor Fritz reveals Juan Martin del Potro was his favorite player growing up and he is sad to see the Argentine retiring. Del Potro, 33, announced last Saturday he will likely retire after playing Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro.

On Tuesday, del Potro made his return to tennis courts as he took on Federico Delbonis in the Buenos Aires first round. Unfortunately for del Potro and his fans, he suffered a 6-1 6-3 loss to Delbonis in the first round.

After the match, del Potro said that was likely his last match: "Now I am calm because my last match was possibly on the court and not in a press conference. I will always remember this."

“He was my favorite player growing up.

Always admired his sportsmanship and how big he hit his forehand. I wanted to play like him. It’s sad to see him retire," Fritz said of del Potro, per Sportskeeda.

Del Potro had been battling various injuries throughout his career.

Del Potro admitted it was hard for him to decide to end his career. "The truth is that this is a moment I never wanted to come. Health leads me to have to make a decision: I made too much effort in these two and a half years," del Potro admitted.

"Sometimes I can lose. I do not have the strength that everyone believes. I think I fulfilled all the dreams in tennis and the most difficult thing to achieve, which is the affection of the people. "I feel like I've given it all.

This is a day I never wanted to come, but I'm going to remember it for the rest of my life." Fritz had a chance to play doubles with del Potro as the two teamed up for the Sttutgart doubles in 2016. Unfortunately for Fritz and del Potro, they were beaten in their opener at the tournament.
