World No. 9 Anett Kontaveit praised Jelena Ostapenko after their St. Petersburg clash and spoke extremely highly of Maria Sakkari ahead of their upcoming final. Kontaveit, seeded at No. 2, defeated seventh-seeded Ostapenko 6-3 6-4 to reach the St.

Petersburg final. Ostapenko made a positive start to the match, having won the opening three games. After losing the opening three games of the match, Kontaveit responded in an impressive way as she claimed three consecutive breaks to win six games in a row and win the opener.

Kontaveit continued her run at the start of the second set, having won the opening two games of the set. Ostapenko got the break back in the third game but lost her serve once again in the fourth game. Ostapenko got the break back in the fifth game but lost her serve while serving to stay in the match in the 10th game.

"It was a very competitive match," said Kontaveit, per the WTA website. "I really had to bring very good energy to come through on top today. She’s a very aggressive player, so I had to be really ready for her big shots, and just be as consistent and take my chances when I could.

I felt like I did that really well today. I was very positive and had good energy and worked really hard today."

Kontaveit set to battle Sakkari

Kontaveit and Sakkari are no strangers to each other, having met 12 times so far.

The head-to-head between the two stands at 6-6. Kontaveit says she will have to play her best in order to stand a chance against Sakkari. "Tomorrow’s match against Maria, she’s a very good player, a very consistent player," said Kontaveit.

"It’s going to be very tough, but I think I have to bring my best game, be ready for everything, and be positive with myself and fight through all the situations that are coming my way tomorrow."
