Leylah Fernandez reacts to saving five match points in epic Monterrey final

World No. 21 Leylah Fernandez said the Monterrey final was "tough mentally and physically" as she saved five match points to edge out Camila Osorio and successfuly defend her Monterrey title. Fernandez, who won her maiden WTA title a year ago in Monterrey, defeated Osorio 6-7 (5) 6-4 7-6 (3) to win back-to-back Monterrey titles.

“Today it was a very, very tough match, not only physically or tennis-wise, but mentally,” Fernandez said after her win, per the WTA website. “Camila, she’s a tough player to play against. She’s very crafty, she does slices, high balls, it’s very unpredictable.

“I’m very, very happy to have gone through these hard moments, and have fought, found solutions. And Camila, I hope we have many, many more finals like this, because without her, I don’t think this tournament, this final, would be [as] special”.

Fernandez won a thriller

Fernandez made a fast start to the match, having taken an early 3-0 lead. Fernandez had a chance to go up by a double break but failed to convert a break point in the sixth game. Osorio then got the break back in the ninth game and forced a tie-break, in which she was 5-4 down before winning three consecutive points to win the opener.

Fernandez bounced back at the start of the second set as she broke Osorio in the third and fifth games to open a 4-1 lead. Osorio got one break back in the sixth game but Fernandez served out for the set in the 10th game.

Fernandez then broke Osorio in the opening game of the third set but the Colombian responded by earning back-to-back breaks and winning the next four games. Fernandez got the break back in the seventh game and saved a match point in the 10th game.

Fernandez then saved four more match points in the 12th game, before dominating the tie-break to complete a comeback win. Fernandez will now be hoping to do well at the Indian Wells Masters.
