Naomi Osaka makes admission regarding French Open

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka is aiming to have a big clay season as she believes she is capable of playing well on clay as well. Osaka has seven titles in her collection but all of those titles have been won outside clay.

Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, has had least Grand Slam success at the French Open. Osaka, 24, has played at the French Open five times and she has never made it past the third round at the tournament. "I really want to focus on the clay season this year, I think I’ve always had a chance to do well in France, but I never really gave myself that mindset," Osaka revealed.

'Osaka can again become the world No. 1'

Osaka has plummeted to No. 78 in the world but Martina Navratilova believes Osaka is still one of the best players on the Tour but just needs more matches and to build her confidence again.

"What’s her record for the last 12 months? [13-7 since winning the 2021 Australian Open]. That leaves you not match-tested. She needs to enter more tournaments for that," Navratilova told the WTA website. "Match play – I think it’s the only thing preventing her from playing more and becoming No.1.

Get the confidence, get the reps and work on the transition game where she’s more comfortable moving forward and finishing points at the net. She does that and she’ll be good." It will be interesting to see how Osaka does at the French Open this year as her 2021 French Open campaign wasn't a memorable one.

Before the start of the tournament, Osaka announced she would not be doing pressers at the French Open. Following her first round win and a ton of criticism, Osaka pulled out of the tournament to focus on her mental health. Osaka didn't want to be a distraction and felt pulling out of the French Open was the best thing to do.
