Gael Monfils reacts to stunning Daniil Medvedev in Indian Wells

World No. 28 Gael Monfils was delighted with the performance he delivered against world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev at the Indian Wells Masters. Monfils, seeded at No. 26, recovered from a set down to upset top-seeded Medvedev 4-6 6-3 6-1 and reach the Indian Wells round-of-16.

"I played great tennis," Monfils said after the match, per the ATP website. "I knew I was in great shape and tough to beat. It's always special to beat a World No. 1."

Monfils bounced back after a lost first set

No break points were seen until the ninth game, when Medvedev broke Monfils to love.

After taking a 5-4 lead, Medvedev routinely served out for the first set in the following game. Medvedev had a chance to go up by an early break in the second set but Monfils saved a break point in the opening game. Monfils claimed his first break in the fourth game but his lead was short-lived as he was broken back in the fifth game.

Monfils kept his focus after getting broken back as he broke Medvedev again in the eighth game and served out for the set in the following game. Medvedev's game fell apart after losing the second set Monfils started the third set with back-to-back breaks and a 4-0 lead.

Medvedev ended Monfils' seven-game run after serving out the fifth game of the third set but Monfils then earned his third break of the set in the seventh game to complete a comeback win. "I moved great," Monfils added.

"I was striking the ball very good and I'm full of confidence, so I'll try to keep the flow." Monfils plays next one of the brightest stars on the Tour - Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz destroyed Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2 6-0 to set up a Monfils clash.

Monfils expects a tough clash when he meets Alcaraz. "It's gonna be a tough one," Monfils previewed. "He's in extremely great form, so I have to play my game and be tough."
