Former world No. 1 Simona Halep shared a touching message to Ashleigh Barty as she told the Australian she will be greatly missed on the WTA Tour. On Wednesday, world No. 1 Barty announced a shock retirement from tennis at the age of 25.
Halep and Barty clashed four times and the Romanian had more success as she beat the Australian three times in those four meetings. "Ash, what can I say, you know I have tears right? My friend, I will miss you on tour.
You were different, and special, and we shared some amazing moments. What's next for you? Grand Slam champion in golf?! Be happy and enjoy your life to the max xo Simo," Halep wrote on Twitter.
Barty: Not an easy decision but I feel the time is right
Today is difficult and filled with emotion for me as I announce my retirement from tennis.
I wasn’t sure how to share this news with you so I asked my good friend @caseydellacqua to help me. I am so thankful for everything this sport has given me and leave feeling proud and fulfilled. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way, I’ll always be grateful for the lifelong memories that we created together," Barty wrote on Instagram.
Barty, who won Wimbledon and the Australian Open in the span of six months, admited she doesn't have it in her anymore. "I know much work it takes to bring the best out of yourself. I've said it to my team multiple times, I just don't have it in me anymore.
I don't have the physical drive, the emotional want, and everything it takes to challenge yourself at the very top of the level anymore. I just know that I'm absolutely spent. I know I have physically I have nothing more to give.
That for me is success. I've given eveything I can to this beautiful sport of tennis. I'm really happy with that. For me that is my success," Barty said in a conversation with Casey Dellacqua.
