Casper Ruud reacts to surviving Holger Rune challenge in Monte Carlo

World No. 7 Casper Ruud spoke positively of rising Danish star Holger Rune after beating fellow Scandinavian at the Monte Carlo Masters. Ruud, the top-ranked Norwegian tennis player, had a first round bye before he overcame Rune in tight two sets 7-6 (5) 7-5.

It was the third meeting between the two and Ruud's third victory over Rune. Ruud hasn't yet dropped a set against Rune, having beaten the Dane in straight sets when they met for the first time in Monte Carlo last year.

Also, Ruud clinched a two-set victory over Rune when they clalshed in Basel late last year. "Holger is one of the young guys on Tour, he’s on the rise, and he was playing well today,” Ruud said, per the ATP Tour website.

“He played much more aggressive than in [our] previous matches and he didn’t let me control the match as much as I would like to."

Ruud escaped with a straight-set victory

Rune had his chances in the first set but failed to realize as Ruud saved break points in the fifth and ninth games to eventually force a tie-break.

After missing out on two break points during the first set, Rune took an early 3-0 lead in the tie-break. Rune had a 5-3 lead before he collapsed as Ruud won the next four points to overturn the deficit and win the first set.

The first set featured no breaks of serve but the second set was a completely different as Ruud lost his serve three times but broke Rune four times to escape with a straight-set win. “He took the ball on the rise many times and was playing fast," said Ruud.

"He’s had some matches on the surface already this year and has been in a good flow, so I’m happy that I was able to stop him”. Ruud plays next against former world No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov.
