Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas felt proud of himself after beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to win back-to-back Monte Carlo Masters title. Tsitsipas, who captured his maiden Masters title in Monte Carlo a year ago, defeated Davidovich Fokina 6-3 7-6 (3) in this year's final to win back-to-back titles in the Principality.
Tsitsipas failed to serve out for the match in the 10th game of the second set but kept his composure and focus as he won the tie-break to seal a straight-set win. “I am very proud of myself,” Tsitsipas said in his on-court interview.
“Things weren’t going well at one point, but I managed to stay composed to finish the match off. I am really proud with the belief I put in my game. Sometimes you doubt yourself, but it is always important to keep your head high."
Tsitsipas: Davidovich Fokina put up a big fight
“He fought in moments I didn’t expect him to fight,” Tsitsipas added.
“He can hit incredible winners out of nowhere and play unpredictably. But I was able to minimise that. I knew he would be a dangerous opponent but that is a great win for me. I think we will see great results from him in the future”.
Davidovich Fokina made a positive start to the match as he broke Tsitsipas in the third game to take a 2-1 lead in the first set. However, Davidovich Fokina's lead was short-lived as Tsitsipas responded with breaks in the fourth and eighth games to overturn the deficit and win the opener.
After winning the first set, Tsitsipas broke Davidovich Fokina in the opening game of the second set. Davidovich Fokina got the break back in the fourth game but Tsitsipas claimed another break in the ninth game to give himself a chance to serve out for the match.
Tsitsipas failed to serve out for the match in the 10th game but dominated the tie-break to seal the title.
