Felix Auger-Aliassime reacts to destroying Jannik Sinner in Madrid

World No. 10 Felix Auger-Aliassime delivered maybe the best performance of his season on Thursday as he absolutely gave no chance to No. 10 seed Jannik Sinner in the Madrid round-of-16. Auger-Aliassime, seeded at No. 8, lost a total of three games versus Sinner as he handed the Italian a 6-1 6-2 loss to progress into the Madrid quarterfinal.

Auger-Aliassime has struggled with his game in recent weeks and he hasn't had a great clay season so far but on Thursday he looked absolutely dominant. What was expected to be a one-sided battle, ended in a demolition as Auger-Aliassime easily won the first meeting between him and Sinner.

"Me playing really well and him missing a few more balls than he should on top of that, I think it just created a big difference," Auger-Aliassime said, per the ATP Tour website.

Auger-Aliassime had the first break poinf of the match in the second game but failed to convert as Sinner served out the game to level the set to one game apiece.

Auger-Aliassime missed out on a chance to break Sinner in the second game but didn't miss out on his break points in the fourth and sixth games as the Canadian finished the first set on a five-game run. After winning the last five games of the first set, Auger-Aliassime won the first two games of the second set.

Auger-Aliassime also had a break point in the third game of the second set but Sinner saved to end Auger-Aliassime seven-game run and reduce the deficit in the second set to 2-1. Unfortunately for Sinner, his struggles on the serve continued as Auger-Aliassime claimed another break in the fifth game to open a 4-1 lead.

Auger-Aliassime then held on to his serve the rest of the way to complete a straight-set win. Next up for Auger-Aliassime is a seventh career meeting versus Zverev. Zverev leads the head-to-head versus Zverev 4-2. However, it should be noted that Auger-Aliassime won their last meeting, that was took place at the ATP Cup earlier this year.
