World No. 3 Alexander Zverev suffered one of the most humiliating losses of his career in the Madrid Masters final and afterward called Carlos Alcaraz "the best player in the world." Zverev, who traditionally plays extremely well in Madrid, was bidding to win his third Madrid title this Sunday.
Unfortunately for Zverev, he didn't have an answer for Alcaraz, who claimed a dominant 6-3 6-1 win over the German. Before beating Zverev, Alcaraz defeated Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in back-to-back matches. In total, Alcaraz defeated three top-5 players en route to winning his first Madrid title.
Zverev agrees with those who expect Alcaraz to win multiple Grand Slams and reach the world No. 1 ranking. "Carlitos. You are the best player in the world right now. You're just 5 years old but you are beating all of us. You are a big superstar who will multiple slams & become No.
1," Zverev said during the on-court trophy ceremony.
Alcaraz dominated Zverev
Alcaraz had the first break point of the match in the fourth game but Zverev saved to level the set to two games apiece. Alcaraz didn't get the first break in the fourth game but made no mistake on his second break point in the sixth game as he broke Zverev to open a 4-2 lead.
Alcaraz then routinely held on to his serve the rest of the set to win the opener. After losing the first set, Zverev served out the opening game of the second set. That was all from Zverev as Alcaraz then claimed three breaks in a row and won six consecutive games to finish the match in style.
Zverev, who enjoyed a great 2021 season and won six titles last year, remains without a title in 2022. Zverev has played two finals this year as in February he ended runner-up in Montpellier.
