Alexander Zverev gives thoughts on his performance versus Alex de Minaur

German tennis star Alexander Zverev was glad with the way he performed against Alex de Minaur as he underlined that the Australia can be a very trick opponent. Zverev, ranked at No. 3 in the world, saw off de Minaur 6-3 7-6 (5) to progress into the Rome quarterfinal.

A day earlier, Zverev defeated Sebastian Baez 7-6 (6) 6-3 in his opener at the tournament. “My performance was better than yesterday. I managed to keep my focus,” Zverev said, per the ATP Tour website. “Alex is a great player and he is a great returner, so losing your serve here and there can happen.

I need to work on serving out a little more. I tried to stay aggressive. I had to hit my shots quite hard against Alex and it worked out well today”.

Zverev beats de Minaur in straight sets

Zverev got off to a fast start to the match, breaking de Minaur early for a 3-0 lead.

In the sixth game, Zverev broke de Minaur for the second time to open a comfortable 5-1 lead. Zverev relaxed a bit in the seventh game as de Minaur managed to get one break back and cut the deficit to 3-5. Zverev didn't serve out for the first set in the seventh game but made no mistake when serving for the opener in the ninth game.

After winning the first set, Zverev earned the first break of the second set in the third game to open a 2-1 lead. Down by a set and a break, de Minaur refused to quit as he broke back Zverev in the sixth game to tie the set to three games apiece.

Zverev broke de Minaur in the 11th game for a 6-5 lead but failed to serve out for the match in the following game as the set went into a tie-break. Failing to serve out for the match in the 12th game didn't impact Zverev, who realized his first match point in the tie-break to complete a straight-set win.
