Jule Niemeier reacts to destroying No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit at Wimbledon

World No. 97 Jule Niemeier sent second-seeded Anett Kontaveit packing out of Wimbledon and after the match said she knew she had the level to beat top-10 players. On Wednesday, Niemeier delivered one of her best performances in 2022 as she saw off Kontaveit 6-4 6-0 to progress into the Wimbledon third round.

It was the first meeting between Niemeier and Kontaveit. "I played two former Top 10 players before, and I knew that I had the level. It was pretty close. I lost twice in three sets. I knew I had the level to beat those players, and I'm really happy I could do it today," Niemeier said, per the WTA website.

"[The 2-0 game] was actually almost one of the most important games in the whole match, because I felt like we were both missing couple of balls, and I started thinking too much in that game. I was pretty happy I could get it, because it's important if you break someone to just hold the serve afterwards."

Niemeier saw off Kontaveit in straight sets

The first break point of the match was seen in the fifth game, when Niemeier broke Kontaveit for a 3-2 lead in the first set. After claiming the first break of the match, Niemeier then held on to her serve the rest of the set to win the opener.

Niemeier then got off to a fast start to the second set, breaking Kontaveit in the opening game of the second set. The second game of the second set was tight but Niemeier managed to prevent Kontaveit from getting her first break points.

Kontaveit then dominated the rest of the set to complete a straight-set win over Kontaveit. Niemeier plays Lesia Tsurenko in the Wimbledon third round. Niemeier, 22, is playing at Wimbledon for the first time in her career. Niemeier is having quite a debut and now she has a good chance to reach the last-16.
