Novak Djokovic: "Nick Kyrgios is authentic"

Novak Djokovic says that authenticity is part of Nick Kyrgios' personality and he admits that he is extremely grateful to the Australian for the support shown to him when everyone was against him over the well-known visa issue.

In fact, when he landed in Australia, Djokovic's visa was canceled and then blocked by the authorities, thus failing to defend the title of the Australian Open the previous year. At that time, Kyrgios had chosen to expose himself personally and was one of the few to publicly denounce the Australian authorities, believing that the Serbian had been treated exaggerated and unfair.

Furthermore, Kyrgios had privately contacted Djokovic to better understand the situation, putting himself at his disposal for any help. Nick Kyrgios who, if on the one hand shows great humanity, on the court over and over again lets himself go and unleashes fierce controversies like the one with Stefanos Tsitsipas at Wimbledon, for which the Greek has even defined him as a bully who annoys his opponents.

Nonetheless, Djokovic accepts his authenticity.

Djokovic: "Grateful for his support"

Novak Djokovic told Sport Klub: "With Kyrgios you often see situations like this on the court. It's always fun but, on the other hand, maybe not so much for his opponent.

The thing is, it's about him, and like it or not, he pays a lot of attention to tennis. I see it's good that he attracts a group of young people who follow him, love him and like him because he is different and plays like this, and I don't think this is bad for our sport.

Perhaps in some situations his comments on and off the pitch are questionable, but this is authentic Kyrgios and I respect him. Even though he has been saying bad things about me for years, in Australia he supported me once again, he was one of the few to speak in public on my behalf and to support me and I am grateful to him for that."

Prior to the start of the clay court season, Nole's brother Djordje Djokovic also said he would like to take Kyrgios to Belgrade and host him, as a token of gratitude for the support shown to Nole. The entire Djokovic family therefore expressed their gratitude when asked about the Australian’s gesture.
