British tennis star Daniel Evans delivered classy words to Kyle Edmund after ousting his fellow compatriot at the Citi Open in Washington. On Tuesday, Evans claimed a comfortable 6-1 6-2 victory over Edmund in the second round.
Edmund, 27, was playing his first ATP level tournament since October 2020. After the match, Evans said he's just happy to see Edmund back and noted that the 27-year-old shouldn't be judged by his latest loss because he is still nowhere near his best level.
“It’s just nice to see him back,” Evans said on-court after beating Edmund, per Tennis365. “He’s nowhere near where he probably wants to be. He’s a great player and I’m just really happy to see him back.
He works super hard, he puts it out there day after day and he’s had a frustrating two years”.

After undergoing three knee surgeries, Edmund is back competing. Edmund has a loaded schedule for the North American hard court swing and his top priority is to come out healthy.
Edmund's top priority is to see his knee respond well, but admits that he would also like to clinch some notable results on hard this summer. “But physically it would be nice to come away with a positive outlook saying I played five tournaments, was on the road for eight weeks, the knee was tested a lot because of the level of tennis and the physicality and if it responds well, I’ll be happy with that.
Naturally, yeah I want some results thrown in there, but just being back on the Tour week in, week out, is more the priority," Edmund explained. Meanwhile, Evans has progressed into the Washington last-16. In the next round, Evans faces the winner of the match between Taylor Fritz and Alexei Popyrin. Evans is playing in Washington for the fourth time and he is seeking his first quarterfinal at the tournament.
