Pablo Carreno Busta insists he wasn't bothered by Nick Kyrgios' comments after the Australian took a jab at him by claiming he would have been ranked outside the top-50 if clay didn't exist. During the 2020 US Open, Kyrgios tweeted that Carreno Busta was a top-50 player only because of so many clay tournaments.

“If clay didn’t exist, dude wouldn’t [have] even been close to top 50,” Kyrgios tweeted in 2020. Two weeks ago on the hard courts of Montreal, Carreno Busta became a Masters champion for the first time in his career.

“When he gets on Twitter, he is one more fan, that's why he says those things that are often not reality. I don't give it much hype. I don't care what people say, I focus on my career and try to enjoy it. I have friends on the Tour, I have a great time with them, so think what you want,” Carreno Busta told Punto de Break.

In the Montreal Masters final, Carreno Busta recovered from a set down beat Hubert Hurkacz 3-6 6-3 6-3. At the age of 31, Carreno Busta clinched his first Masters title.

“I felt a lot of happiness, it is a very important tournament, winning a Masters 1000 is something very serious, but I did not feel relieved. At no time did I think that I had to win a Masters 1000 before retiring, or that not winning it would not let me be happy with my career.

I think about the day to day, now that I am old and have been on the Tour for so many years, I try to enjoy everything a little more, both on and off the court. But it is true that, among my goals at the beginning of the season, one of them was always going to win a big tournament, even if I wasn't the favourite.

This year the reward has come for a goal that we had been setting ourselves for many years," Carreno Busta explained. Now, Carreno Busta is set for the US Open, where he plays Dominic Thiem in the first round.
