Alize Cornet described herself as "the upset-girl" after ending Emma Raducanu's US Open title defence and said she was just trying to put on a show for the New York crowd. On Tuesday, 40th-ranked Cornet ended Raducanu's US Open title defence after handing the 11th-ranked Brit a 6-3 6-3 loss.
At the start of the season, Cornet upset Simona Halep at the Australian Open. Two months ago, Cornet ended Iga Swiatek's streak of 37 consecutive matches after beating the Pole at Wimbledon. After beating Raducanu, Cornet called the 19-year-old "a very good player" and insisted that she didn't become a Grand Slam champion by a pure coincidence.
"I think I played a pretty solid match," Cornet said. "I had to because Emma is a very good player. She didn't win a slam for nothing. I know how she can play. I was ready for tonight. This year I'm kind of the upset-girl. I know people were rooting for Emma a lot, but I was really trying to put on a show and take them with me.
It kind of worked in the end. I just hope they're going to be behind me for the second round."
Cornet ousted Raducanu in straight sets
Cornet got broken in the opening game of the match but broke back Raducanu in the second game.
In the sixth game, Cornet broke Raducanu for a 4-2 lead but the Briton broke back immediately in the following game. In the eighth game, Cornet earned her third break of the set to open a 5-3 lead. Then, Cornet served out for the first set in the following game.
After losing the first set, Raducanu had a 3-1 lead in the second set. Down by a break, Cornet responded with three consecutive breaks and won five games in a row to complete a straight-set win. Cornet plays Katerina Siniakova in the US Open second round.
