"The criticisms agains Jannik Sinner are unfair," said Italian Davis Cup captain

One of the big absentees at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga was undoubtedly Jannik Sinner, along with his on-field rival Carlos Alcaraz. Both were stopped by quite serious injuries in the 2022 season finale in the ATP Tour, which prevented them from participating in the team event with their respective countries.

The Italian was unable to recover from a problem with his finger, which led him to end the season prematurely and immediately concentrate his work in the gym for 2023. Also regarding this matter, the talented 21-year-old has faced some criticism of the decision taken.

The Italian captain for the Davis Cup Filippo Volandri recently intervened in defense of him, who somewhat explained the forced choice of Sinner and how heavy his absence is, explaining it during an interview.

"The criticisms agains Jannik Sinner are unfair."

He said: "I am sorry to hear criticism of him.

I spoke at length with Simone Vagnozzi and Jannik's blue future is not in question. He made himself available in the preliminary round in February, despite the fact that he was going through a very difficult period. He had left the technical historian and had all eyes on him.

In Bologna he joined immediately after the painful defeat with Alcaraz in New York. To say that he is not attached to the blue shirt is really ungenerous." Volandri also revealed the possible plans for the future from the point of view of the doubles: "One could also think of a Sinner-Berrettini duo.

And Lorenzo Sonego is also making a good journey with Vavassori, but the latter still needs to gain experience to be able to deal with responsibilities like Davis's. We are also working on the replacement, in the circuit we also take wild cards in doubles to give the young players more experience." In the meantime, Italy has discovered that it will not have to play in the preliminary round as regards the Davis Cup 2023: the ITF has in fact decided to assign a wild card, also by virtue of the results obtained in this edition.
