Jannik Sinner: It was an unlucky year, I'm aiming for ATP Finals in 2023

Jannik Sinner reveals one of his main goals in 2023 will be to reach the ATP Finals. Sinner, 21, traveled to Turin as an alternate last year. After Matteo Berrettini pulled out of the ATP Finals after his first match, Sinner replaced his fellow compatriot in the tournament.

In his first-ever ATP Finals match, Sinner defeated Hubert Hurkacz and gave himself a chance to qualify for the semifinal as an alternate. Sinner also competed well against Daniil Medvedev in his group stage finale, but ultimately fell short to the Russian in a third-set tie-break.

This year, Sinner didn't qualify for the Atp Finals, not even as an alternate. "I'm aiming for Turin, I want to get back to playing the Nitto ATP Finals. I know I can do it, but it will be decisive not to miss important matches and tournaments as I was forced to do this year," Sinner said on the ATP Tennis Radio Podcast.

Sinner will have to stay healthy in order to make the ATP Finals

One of the big reasons why Sinner didn't qualify for the ATP Finals this year was his inability to stay healthy for a longer period. Throughout the entire season, Sinner was hampered by injuries and physical setbacks.

Those setbacks prevented Sinner from winning his first Masters or a Grand Slam title. "It's been a tough season for me, I've had small problems in so many tournaments. But from another point of view I played many games, I got more continuous results with many eighths and many quarter-finals.

It's been an unlucky year, but in many ways I can be proud of what I've done," Sinner reflected. For Sinner, staying healthy for a longer period will be the key in 2023. Sinner made three Grand Slam quarterfinals this year and he will certainly be aiming to do even better at the Grand Slam level this upcoming season.
