Wawrinka on Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal: "Comparison impossible"

Stan Wawrinka is trying to find his best physical shape after the numerous injuries that have prevented him from playing continuously in recent seasons. The Swiss has decided to restart from the United Cup and to represent his country in the new team event.

Switzerland started the tournament by beating Kazakhstan soundly 5-0 and Wawrinka edged a 6-3, 7-6(3) finish on world No. 37 Alexander Bublik. At the press conference, Wawrinka was reminded that Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were able to win a Grand Slam after undergoing surgery.

The Swiss tennis player underwent surgery on his left foot in March 2021.

Wawrinka on Federer and Nadal: "Comparison impossible"

Stan explained: "I think it's impossible to compare Federer and Nadal to other players. We are all different.

I had my first operation in 2017 and was able to get back into the top 20. I was playing at a very good level and I was very happy with that. Now, I had a new operation and I am 37 years old. I'm not getting any younger. It's very difficult.

I still think I can achieve important results and win tournaments. I hope to make it next season. I don't know what kind of tournament, but as long as I enjoy and love playing tennis and do everything I have to do to give my all, I'll keep going.

Obviously it wouldn't be fun to lose every week. I want to experience the feeling of being able to win more games again. Match against Bublik? I am very happy with my performance. I expressed a great level, I was very focused.

I didn't expect to play so well in the first match of the year. It's never easy to face an opponent like Bublik, so I'm happy with my game. Captain and player in this tournament? For now things are going well, I felt great in both roles.

I was looking forward to playing the United Cup; I think the format is great and offers the possibility for male and female players to play together."
