Interviewed by the Italian newspaper Il Giornale, the former Ukrainian player Sergiy Stakhovsky released a short war diary, also focusing on the Russian tennis players of the current circuit who have shown him support: among them, there is Andrey Rublev.

"I talked to Andrey Rublev, who wrote to me in the first weeks of the war, comforting me. The fact is that in Russia you cannot publicly demonstrate against this conflict." For Stakhovsky it was the tennis world that showed solidarity: "I have received dozens of messages of comfort and support from players from the past, even from referees.

Amélie Mauresmo, for example, had managed to get some tickets to the Roland Garros for some children here, she was very kind. " Stakhovsky is not the only one who left everything to fight alongside his country, Alex Dolgopolov also made the same choice: "We talk quite often even if we are in separate departments." Of the two, however, the best known is the first, precisely because of what he did at Wimbledon: winning against the holder of eight Wimbledon titles, Roger Federer: "I remember everything, I could tell you everything point by point.

But I'm more proud of the 4 titles won on the circuit, which were the result of an entire week. At the end of which you can prove who you really are."

Sergiy Stakhovsky and the war

A year ago Putin's Russia invaded Ukraine and this started a war that still devastates the Ukrainian country.

A year ago, in the Dubai tournament, the Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev sent a message of peace, writing a simple sentence on the camera: "No to war please". Weeks later, in an initial phase of the conflict, the former tennis players decided to make themselves available for their country and take on the role of fighters.

Among these, also Sergiy Stakhovsky, the Ukrainian tennis player who defeated Roger Federer at Wimbledon: protagonist on the field and in battles involving tennis.
