Ben Shelton: "Fabio Fognini is a tennis legend"

Ben Shelton, the very young US native of Atlanta, is enjoying his first career victory in the Indian Wells Master 1000. The young home player was very skilful in overcoming the Italian Fabio Fognini in the opening match, who was unable to do anything against his opponent, yielding 6-4, 6-1.

At the end of the match, the American expressed all his satisfaction at having passed the round and dedicated beautiful words to the Italian. Shelton analyzed at the end of the match in an interview with the Tennis Channel: "The atmosphere was electric, I adored it and I really enjoyed it.

It was my first game in Indian Wells and getting a debut win in any tournament is always good. Fabio does a great job of changing pace and directions, changing the game often, so I knew I had to focus a lot, stay focused and just think about what was happening on my side of the net.

He has a lot of experience, he is a legend of this sport. Being able to stay focused and carry the game forward, despite some moments of pressure, makes me quite proud."

Now the American will await his countryman Taylor Fritz, seeded number 4 on the draw and current holder of the title: "I'm really looking forward to facing the defending champion, a guy who is in the top 5 right now and is doing things we haven't seen in American tennis in a long time.

I hope we will have a spectacular crowd, even better than this first match. I trust myself and I can't wait for the match." Shelton then reflected on the recent past, given that exactly one year ago he was preparing to play the college playoffs in America: "Thinking about it, it's absolutely insane, I find it hard to believe how everything has changed in one year.

If you had told me that I would have done this journey during that time, I would have surely told you that I was lying to myself. It took a lot of effort and work, luckily I have a great group of people around me who help me believe in myself but keep me humble."
