Mark Philippoussis is back as coach of Stefanos Tsitsipas and the big news, as confirmed by the Greek himself, is that the Australian is his tennis player's main coach. Already last week we had only seen Philippoussis in his garage and the news had been in the air for some time, but now it's official.
His father Apostolos has instead been relegated to a secondary role: he will participate in his son's box especially in tournaments where Philippoussis will not be there. A surprising choice but which, as reported by Stefanos, had to be made and the first results, although the connection remains to be verified, can be seen with Stefanos' victory in the last tournament in Los Cabos, which took place last week.
Stefanos Tsitsipas: "I didn't kick out my father"
In an interview with the ATP, Stefanos Tsitsipas explained this choice, highlighting the reasons that led to all this: "My father will continue to follow me off the field.
He supports me and supports the decision I've made. We still have a plan to work together, some weeks I'll work with Mark and some with my father. I absolutely don't want him to step aside, he was the person who lit my path and shaped me as a professional tennis player." Apostolos was not present in Mexico and the son then continued: "Right now I have given my father some time to rest, he hasn't stopped since I was 12.
I think it is very healthy for him to spend some of time away from competitions, with the aim of coming back much fresher. Sometimes parents are overwhelmed by emotions, I'm not a father but I can imagine how touching it is to see a son give his all in every match and feel certain emotions during the challenge.
I love my father and I want him to step aside just to live a path we have built together and not to walk away. He will still continue with us and try to be there on our journey”.
