Taylor Fritz, at the press conference on the eve of the US Open, talked about many topics, including the retirements of John Insner and Roger Federer, but also of Novak Djokovic. The American tennis player explained: "Djokovic obviously returned to the United States after two years.

He absolutely wants to challenge himself to win the big tournaments. The final between him and Carlos Alcaraz in Cincinnati was crazy. I wish I could have played my match against Novak better. But I felt that his shots were really working.

Obviously he is the tennis player to beat in these weeks." About John Inser, he said: "When I first started playing the junior and then the senior circuits, John was the guy. He's been at the pinnacle of American tennis for a very long time.

Always super nice to me and all the new guys plus young people. It is sad to know that he will retire." Fritz will participate again this year in the Laver Cup for Team World. The American recalled the last edition of the team event, made special by Roger Federer's last official match.

The American said: "Being there on his retirement day, being able to talk to him, shaking his hand - those are things I will never forget. Of course, winning the tournament and being able to celebrate with the whole team was special.

Having a group of guys you can party with and have fun with makes things so much better. I think it was one of the best moments of my tennis career, because I was able to celebrate with a group of close friends."

Fritz coul meet Djokovic at the US Open 2023

As happened at the ATP Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, Taylor Fritz was drawn in the same quarterfinal as Novak Djokovic also at the US Open.

The American experienced a nightmare first set at the Western & Southern Open, a set in which he failed to pick up a single game. In the second set of play, things went better. Fritz conquered the break and found more continuity of service. However, Djokovic further raised the level in the final part of the set and surprised the American twice in a row.
