Daria Kasatkina, despite two three-set battles, got the third round of the US Open 2023, beating the American player Sofia Kenin. However, the Russian tennis player shocked everyone with the words released in the post-match interview.
A message that greatly surprised the fans in the stands. She said: "I wish I knew how to forget tennis, it's everywhere, it keeps spinning in my head." The 26-year-old Russian tennis player, who has always spoken out against the war in Ukraine, has a great passion for sport and above all for tennis, but on some occasions she feels like detaching herself: "Sometimes it makes me nauseous to think so much about tennis, it is also impossible to disconnect here.
There's the US Open everywhere!" Here is the video of the statements made by the athlete, who was excited for the victory obtained in the second round:
Daria Kasatkina wants to know how to forget about tennis sometimes:
“I wish I knew what to do to forget about tennis. It’s always spinning around in the head. Sometimes I’m getting sick from it. It’s everywhere in the city. You go for a walk & everywhere is US Open”. 😂 pic.twitter.com/ywvVgRNnhi — The Tennis Letter (@TheTennisLetter) September 1, 2023
Kasatkina talks about the war in Ukraine
On the eve of the US Open, Kasatkina recalls what she thinks about the war in Ukraine.
She said, after playing her match at Wimbledon: "I'm so grateful to the crowd and the people who welcomed me so warmly, especially after what happened last year. Russia is at war and anything can be propaganda." Not just the war.
The same gender love is considered a crime in Russia and Kasatkina wants to fight for this too: "The laws in our country are getting worse and worse. I realize that being gay in Russia is becoming impossible. All of these things and events make me it makes me say what I feel and what I want to say.
And I could no longer keep silent about myself, about the war. I just felt that, as a public person, this is what I can do, and I did." One of the consequences that have been inflicted on tennis players of Russian and Belarusian nationality is that they cannot compete under their flag.
For Kasatkina this problem can be solved: "I want to ask the WTA if I can play under the rainbow flag!"
