During the press conference following her win over Iga Swiatek in the US Open's round of 16, Jelena Ostapenko apologized to a Polish journalist who confessed he was sad because his compatriot left the Grand Slam. "I apologize, I'm a little upset because you ousted our champion," said the Polish journalist.
"I'm sorry," Ostapenko responded with a smile.
The journalist followed up by saying he now roots for Ostapenko because she's from Eastern Europe, just like Swiatek.
