During the Davis Cup group stage, there was a lot of talk about the format that the most famous team competition should adopt so as not to erase history and abandon all tradition. Stan Wawrinka sparked the controversy. The Swiss pointed out, through his Twitter account, how the choice to play the matches in a single venue is not healthy for the tournament.

"Thank you, Pique and ITF. France vs Switzerland in Manchester," Wawrinka wrote, showing images of the empty stadium. The Swiss pointed the finger at Gerard Piqué, criticized by many for having given a new face to the Davis Cup.

The company founded in 2017 by Piqué had purchased the rights to organize the Davis Cup in 2018 and was expected to manage the prestigious team competition for at least 25 years. Last January 12, however, the ITF announced that it had terminated the partnership with Kosmos with immediate effect.

The situation would have degenerated due to the lack of economic agreement. In fact, Piqué was unable to meet the request of 40 million dollars a year imposed by the International Tennis Federation.

Feliciano Lopez defends the new Davis Cup

At the end of the long diatribe, the case was brought to court by Piqué, while Feliciano Lopez became the director of the Davis Cup and defended the competition, in an interview given to Punto de Break.

He said: "We focus on the negative images and not on the positive ones. In Bologna there were 10 thousand people following Italy without Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini. Sonego was on the pitch with Galarneau and 10 thousand people in the stands, which means that Italy wants to watch tennis and cheers for its national team.

We must take these cases as a reference. The enthusiasts and aficionados are the beauty of this competition. The enthusiasm of being able to cheer for your country. We are available to evaluate any transformation if useful to solve the problem." The Davis Cup Final will be held in November in Malaga and the organizers hope the to get a much big crowd success, respect last season.
