Daniil Medvedev's ambitions after Beijing: "I want to win another event this year"
by LORENZO CIOTTI
Jannik Sinner beat Daniil Medvedev in the ATP 500 final in Beijing. Two tie-breaks were decisive, in which the 22-year-old Italian expressed an even higher level than the already very high one displayed throughout the match.
The Italian's return makes the difference, a weapon on which the Russian tennis player often relies. This is the first victory in seven matches for Sinner, worth the third defeat in eight finals for the Russian in 2023. In the press conference, Medvedev appeared rather calm, determined to win another title between now and the end of the year.
Daniil Medvedev's words at the press conference
The Russian analyzed the final as follows: "As I said yesterday, for some reason the court is much faster in the afternoon. It happened yesterday too. I didn't lose service even once.
I don't know why, but both yesterday and today the conditions were quite fast. He served very well, I served very well. Everything was decided in the tie-breaks, where he was a little better than me. In both the first and second set tie-breaks I should have done better.
Unfortunately tennis can be like this. I hope that next time I have to play two tie-breaks in a final I can win."
Medvedev's 20 titles came in 20 different cities: "However, I hope to be able to interrupt this streak, because this year I have four tournaments left to play and I have already won all four.
As I said yesterday, in any hard court tournament, especially on hard courts, where I haven't won yet, I would like to win it. I love Beijing, it's a great tournament. I love China, I will probably go back in the future."
On the end of the season, Medvedev has clear ideas: "I think everyone is a bit tired.
We are at the end of the season. At the same time, I know for sure that when I am in this form, reaching the finals and playing well, it is better not to lose this momentum.
I will go to Shanghai and try to do my best. I think the balls are different, I don't know if the pitches will be different, but I will need time to adapt, I haven't seen the draw yet.
I'm in good shape.
Even today I felt that the match was very good, there was a great level of tennis. I had to do better if I wanted to win, but the level was excellent. I want to continue playing well this season. It's not over yet, there are many points I can make. Now it's time to go to Shanghai, give my best and hope to win the title."
