Daniil Medvedev, after the defeat suffered in the final of the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing against Jannik Sinner, claimed the good things done in 2023. The Russian won five titles this season, also winning the Miami Open and the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, and played the semi-final and final at Wimbledon and the US Open respectively.

First Carlos Alcaraz and then Novak Djokovic stopped him on the way to the second Major.

Medvedev explained: "It was a great season. Obviously I would have liked to win a Slam. But if we don't talk about Majors, even though I had an excellent run at Wimbledon and the US Open and lost against great opponents, it remains one of the best seasons.

I've won a lot of tournaments, some incredible matches, and I've been consistent. It's not over yet: I want to try to finish the season well, starting with the Masters 1000 in Shanghai."

Medvedev: "Mine remains a great season"

Medvedev started from the Rolex Shanghai Masters and he is facing in these minutes Cristian Garin on his first match, an opponent he has beaten two out of three times in his career.

The Russian told at the press conference on the eve of his match: "We have faced each other several times, not recently. Last year we trained together on a couple of occasions. He is a great player, he was in the top 20 if I'm not mistaken Everyone who has been in the top 20 can play well.

He faced some difficulties in the last period, but he won his first match here and got used to the playing conditions. So it will be tough and I will have to be at my best. I love this tournament. I noticed some changes: the restaurant is bigger with the addition of some outdoor areas.

The gym is also bigger. I saw that they made a Formula 1 simulator available.

I like all the tournaments, but the one in Shanghai should be the best one at the moment. The first training session was fantastic, but the matches are different.

So tomorrow will be the real test. Let's see what will happen.

My approach will not be that of a title holder. It's a tournament that I love and I have many good memories. But I don't have the feeling of having won the last edition and having to defend the title. I would like to win again this year."
