Iga Swiatek won the title at the WTA Finals, clearly beating Jessica Pegula in straight sets. Twenty games conceded in five matches, a sensational domination to say the least and which partly overshadowed the quite revisable organization of the Mexican tournament in Cancun, the last act with the WTA Finals at the end of the season.
Iga responded to everyone, won the semifinal against her great rival Aryna Sabalenka and gave the crumbs to her and the American Jessica Pegula, thus returning to the queen of the WTA ranking. A record that she had lost this season but which she regained with this tournament, proving to everyone that she is hungrier than ever.
Swiatek played an almost perfect match, 6-1 6-0 with eleven consecutive games after the initial 1-1. An almost embarrassing gap that we are not used to seeing in men's tennis.
Iga Swiatek double joy: "I'm very happy"
The Pole celebrated and the data characterizing her are extraordinary.
Iga explained after the victory: "Being number one in the world again is definitely a dream come true. I would say that after this season I didn't expect to return to this position at the end of the year, I was already thinking about next year and doing well again.
Instead I played a great tournament, this is proof that working hard and focusing on the right things pays off in the end. I can say that I'm really happy." After the knockout at the US Open Iga appeared almost destroyed, disappointed after a rather difficult year.
Now several consecutive successes have arrived and the tennis player has won the WTA 1000 in Beijing and the WTA Finals in Cancun. Finally Iga concluded: "I'm happy with how this week went, a response to the rest of the season.
I hope that this 2023 will be useful as an experience for the future." Jessica Pegula also praised the new number one's performance: "She was pretty solid, she played, putting pressure on me from start to finish. She was hard on me, but I don't know why. But it was one of those days where I felt in difficulty and I don't know why."
