Novak Djokovic is playing the match against Hubert Hurkacz, which can determine qualification (or not) for the semi-finals of the ATP Finals 2023. Before facing the Pole in the third and decisive match of his group, the Serb was defeated by Jannik Sinner at the end of an epic challenge.
Sinner achieved a real feat against the 24-time Slam champion Novak Djokovic, beating him for the first time in his young career. Former Slam champion Francesca Schiavone gave an interview to Sky Sport, during which she expressed her thoughts on the current moment that Sinner and Djokovic are experiencing at the ATP Finals in Turin.
Francesca Schiavone on Djokovic's chances to win the ATP Finals 2023
"They played a best of 3 sets match as if it were a challenge with Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Nole himself on the court, when we were all stuck in front of the TV admiring the Big 3.
The only thing I wonder is whether the new one will succeed generation, that of Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune to play matches like this at the best of 5 sets. If that were the case we would have reached the top again like ten years ago.
In my opinion Djokovic is not the favorite to win the ATP Finals, but he has the ability to recruit not only strength but also concentration. Furthermore, the analysis he will make of the match played yesterday will allow him to go to the semi-final with a different spirit and another concentration, if he manages to win the match that awaits him tomorrow.
He needs to have very high concentration and make the difference with his weapons: explosiveness at the right moment, being able to see the opposite half of the court much bigger than the current Alcaraz or Zverev." Schiavone focused on the improvements ahead from Sinner, in 2023: "Jannik is capable of choosing and deciding the path to take.
He does it with Simone Vagnozzi, with his team and it is important that they are very compact. He has very important qualities including courage. Against Djokovic he had the courage when he had the right ball to push and never go back, and this courage is dictated by a set of choices that he made together with the others and by the process of victories that he managed to obtain.
The service and all the technical changes that he is making are important. He is a guy who is very attentive to every detail and that is making the difference." The Italian tennis player won with a score of 7-5 6-7 (5) 7-6 (2) at the end of a very high level match.
