In one of the most complicated phases of his young career, Holger Rune decided to rely on the experience of former world number one Boris Becker and the results, both from a tactical and technical point of view, immediately had the desired effects.
Rune in fact obtained qualification for the ATP Finals by reaching the semi-finals in Basel and then the quarter-finals at the ATP Masters 1000 in Paris-Bercy. Making his debut in the Masters Tournament, Rune did not make it past the Green Group due to the two defeats suffered against Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner.
In the past, Becker has been linked several times as Alexander Zverev's new coach, but the two have never made a definitive choice. The German, who returned to play in the ATP Finals after his ankle injury, spoke about the Becker-Rune partnership in a recent interview with Sky Sports Germany.
"Boris is a tennis expert. He knows this sport inside out and knows what it means to be at the top or how to get there. This can help Holger Rune a lot. From a sporting point of view, Boris is simply one of the greatest experts," he explained.
And Becker shares what he wants from Rune just at the beginning
"He is going through a difficult time but he is open to changes and this makes my job very fun. Timing in life matters and this is the right time for this challenge.
Now the real work begins, everything is new and fresh. I repeat : What interests me most about him is his heart. He plays tennis with passion. He gives everything for this sport and it's an excellent prerequisite," said Becker after making the start of his sporting collaboration with Rune official.
Zverev and Rune will come back on the court with the upcoming tennis season, which will start, like every year, with the Australian Swing. At the Australian Open especially, Zverev will try to confirm the good season lived in 2023, while Rune will try to recover from the bad results of the second half of this season. And Becker will try to help the Dane to get new amazing results.
