In a recent interview with The Age, Ajla Tomljanovic shared the negative feelings that plagued her after withdrawing from the 2023 edition of the Australian Open. The season that has just ended was the most troubled of the Australian tennis player's career, as she herself confessed.

"I've had heartbreaking moments in my career here in Australia, but it's always the place I can't wait to get back to. Being here again is great. The memories of last year aren't fun or positive. I asked myself: Will I be able to play again? I thought about it a lot, but I just wanted to remind myself that I've managed to do this before and that I can do it again.

I have to get back into shape. I don't want to simply repeat myself but take a further step forward. Ambitions are always high. I just have to constantly remind myself how far I've come this year, because there have been some really bad moments.

I'm feeling pretty good again, but there's still a lot of work to do to improve," explained Ajla. Tomljanovic will represent Australia at the next edition of the United Cup, a team tournament created by the ATP.

Tears and negative thoughts: Tomljanovic's 2023

Ajla Tomljanovic's 2023 was unfortunately affected by injury and knee surgery.

The tennis player born in 1993 announced her withdrawal in tears at the Australian Open, and she only found the court again at the US Open, more than seven months later. The Australian closed the season with an important victory - especially from a confidence point of view - at the WTA 125 tournament in Florianopolis, Brazil, beating Renata Zarazua in the final with a score of 6-1, 6-1.

Tomljanovic will start from 291st position in the rWTA anking and, her first goal, will be to rebuild the ranking that a player of her level deserves.
