2024 will officially begin with the Australian Open for Carlos Alcaraz. The young Spanish tennis player closed 203 by beating Novak Djokovic with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the exhibition match played at the Riyadh Season Tennis Cup.
During the final ceremony, Carlos Alcaraz Senior joined his son, who was immediately asked to provide an update on the tennis rivalry with his father. "I never beat him! When I started to grow and play better and better, he didn't want to play with me anymore.
So I'd say the head-to-head is still in his favour," joked the Spaniard, making the fans smile for the words he shared. On his Instagram account, Alcaraz then wrote: "Thank you Riyadh for hosting me at the Tennis Cup. It was a great experience.
I hope to see you again soon!"
The match against Djokovic
Carlitos immediately lost the break lead and played a bad game at 4-5. Game ended with a painful double fault which handed the first set to the Serbian champion. Alcaraz started well in the second set of the game and, this time, did not waste the advantage by carefully protecting his serves.
Djokovic managed to reduce the gap in the central part of the decisive set, but Alcaraz did not let himself be influenced by the uncapitalized opportunities and surprised his rival again in response, guaranteeing himself the opportunity to serve for the match.
Alcaraz talked about the challenge with Djokovic at the end of the match in Riyadh: "My goal for 2024 is to continue to improve, both as a player and as a person, this is the most important thing for me. My goal is to keep beating Djokovic, that's the goal.
I will try to play my best tennis in 2024, to win big tournaments... we'll see. However, the most important thing for me is to continue learning in the Tour."
