For some media and insiders, Daniil Medvedev was the heir of the Big Three, but now he already seems to be overtaken by the new young generation that is advancing.

The former tennis player Andrea Petkovic spoke out on this topic in an episode of Rennae Stubbs' podcast, explaining what the Russian tennis player's main problem is.

"Medvedev is in the worst position, he is a big star but he has always been number two or three. First there was Novak Djokovic, now there are Jannik Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz and this is a problem. In prime time they will always be there while Daniil will go into the background. Even if he will be number one in the world, as long as Sinner or Alcaraz are there, he will always be next. This is all a shame," she explained.

Medvedev will now be in Miami to defend the title he won last year. The Russian started his title defense attempt at the Miami Open on the right foot. The Russian player defeated Marton Fucsovics 6-4 6-2 to reach the third round in which he will now face the British player Cameron Norrie who defeated Flavio Cobolli after a long battle.

Towards the end of the Big 3 era

The era of the Big Three is coming to its natural epilogue, next. Roger Federer has retired, Rafael Nadal is close to his professional horizon and only Novak Djokovic still appears competitive. The ATP No.1 has experienced difficulties in recent months: he still has zero titles but remains at the top of the world rankings.

He is not present in Miami to prepare to compete at his best on clay-season. While the older generation is preparing to end its legendary era, there are young people moving forward to take their space: just think of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

The two are putting on a show and are now giving life to a new rivalry, thus neglecting other champions of the middle generation, such as Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and above all the Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev.
