The hip injury seems partially behind him, but the performance expressed in the first round of the Roland Garros against Christopher Eubanks did not convince Boris Backer about Jannik Sinner's chances. The former German legend was not convinced by Sinner's performance on Monday, especially from a physical point of view. Speaking with Eurosport, Becker expressed many doubts about the young Italian's athletic ability, underlining how he still does not express himself well on clay courts and how Slams are always treacherous tournaments.

"I think clay is the surface on which he expresses himself least well. This is different on outdoor and indoor hard courts and grass. Here he represents a great threat. On clay he hasn't won a major tournament yet. He has to prove it. Last year at Roland Garros he lost badly in the second round to Daniel Altmaier. He also comes from a serious injury, which prevented him from participating in the home tournament in Rome.

If he is in shape, there will be a chance he will have it, but only the court will be able to give answers. In the Slams you play the best of five sets and you don't win matches easily, serving 25 aces. Jannik is a very intelligent boy and he has surrounded himself with competent people had he not been well he would not have taken part in the tournament," he explained.

Meanwhile Sinner got off to a good start at the Parisian Major. In an overall easy first round, he, as I said before, beat the American Christopher Eubanks. Sinner, despite winning, showed a physical form that still needs to be improved, which however is completely normal considering the long period away from the court to treat his hip injury. Only as the days and matches go by will we be able to understand whether Jannik has really overcome the physical problem or not.
