Much disappointment but a boost of confidence for the coming weeks. Matteo Berrettini's run at the Atp 250 Stuttgart ended with a defeat in the final, with the Italian surrendering to a fantastic and rediscovered Jack Draper, also totally affected by injuries in the last year.

The 22-year-old Briton made a comeback against The Hammer, saved two bloody break points and prevailed with a score of 3-6 7-6(5) 6-4, winning his first title on the Atp circuit and his own best ranking (31st). A painful defeat for the 28-year-old Roman, who came within a step of his third career title on grass at the Boss Open.

Berrettini, visibly disappointed in his speech during the award ceremony, congratulated his opponent, expressing his regret for not being able to end his good week in Germany with a success.

Matteo Berrettini spoke to the microphones after the defeat: "Congratulations to Jack, it was a fantastic week and match. This defeat will hurt me for a while, I have won and lost matches like this.

Jack, I am sure that you will win other trophies. Now, however, I am a little sad". Berrettini then thanked the members of his team, who helped him in the difficult moments of recent years, as well as the Italian public and the large one present in Stuttgart.

"I thank my team, we know what we have been through, many ups and downs. I would like to show you what happens behind the scenes, I thank you for having accompanied me in this return of mine. For the public at home, I am sorry for having lost but thank you for the support: you are the best.

To the public in Stuttgart, every year there are more of you: I thank you". For Berrettini, the good news comes from the ranking, as the final reached allows him to jump 30 positions in the ranking, up to 65th position.

And given his condition, with the next commitments awaiting him on grass, the ranking can only improve.
