Grass is certainly the most treacherous and insidious surface, especially in the first rounds, when it is still fresh. And it is especially so if he is facing an opponent who is comfortable on grass. This also applies to those - like Jannik Sinner - who are considered favorites on the eve of their match. And in fact it turned out to be a rather complicated debut in the ATP 500 in Halle for the young Italian, who had to find a way to contain the power of the serve and the solidity of Tallon Griekspoor, capable of taking a set from the new world number 1, before losing in three sets.

"I struggled in the second set, when I found myself down 0-40 on serve. If he had made that point, it would have been even more complicated. It's just a matter of trying to find the right confidence on the grass and I showed it. I hope I can show some good tennis in the next round too. I ran a little from right to left, then I tried to somehow catch the ball and make him play at least one more shot.

He was under pressure with the break point and somehow I managed it. Then I gained confidence. It was definitely a mentally difficult match. In the tie-break I was ahead 5-1, but I still lost it. This can happen, especially on this surface where everything can slide very quickly. I think I was good mentally," told Sinner at the on-court interview.

The Dutchman prevailed in a long tie-break (which ended 10-8) but was unable to avoid the return of the South Tyrolean: the turning point in the second set from 2-2, when the Italian recovered a game from 0- 40 and in the following one he obtained the first break of the entire match thanks to a splendid point. From that moment on, the 22-year-old controlled the match very well and qualified for the second round of the tournament (6-3, 6-2 the final two sets).
