Serena Williams' reign as the world no. 1 will not remain forever according to former world no. 1 and compatriot Lindsay Davenport, who’s predicted Garbine Muguruza to be the next world no. 1. Davenport thinks that Muguruza needs to improve her consistency throughout the year.
This season, while the Spaniard won the French Open, she’s also had some bad results. She was upset in the early rounds in Brisbane, Dubai, Indian Wells, Madrid, and in the grass season, in Mallorca and Wimbledon. 'She’s so much better than so many players, I feel if she gets more disciplined, she can win a lot of matches,' said Davenport, adding that of all players, Muguruza was the one player by whom she was deeply impressed.
However, for the present, Serena Williams will continue to be the top-ranked WTA player. Williams had to lose before the final and Kerber had to win the final for there to be any further change in the WTA rankings, when they come out on Monday.
But now, while Kerber will be ranked second, Williams will maintain her dominance atop the rankings. It will be the American’s 300th week as the world no. 1 and only Steffi Graf has been ranked longer than her, at 377 weeks.
