World no. 8 Bruno Soares is looking forward to playing the Rio Olympics in August with his compatriot Marcelo Melo. The pair will be trying to get their first Olympic medal. During a press conference, Soares spoke about the prevalence of the Zika virus that has forced some athletes to withdraw like golfer Rory McIlroy.
Soares is very angry with how the topic has been covered by the media. According to him, the problem is under control. 'I spoke with many people and they are very worried. The international media has exaggerated and here in Brazil, there isn't much worry.
Many athletes have come here and did not have any problem. Many athletes have skipped the Olympics, but they are not courageous enough to say the truth that they did not want to come here,' said Soares. Rafael Nadal, who played the Rio Open earlier this year, has firmly committed himself to playing the Olympics as have other top-ranked players including Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka.
