Former World No.1 Lleyton Hewitt has helped feisty Australian Nick Kyrgios become a better player, mentally and strategically. The two share a friendship rather than a mentor-student relationship and that has helped Hewitt guide Kyrgios better.
Hewitt believes it was his willingness to get to know him off it that's allowed him to get the most out of him. “Nick’s a different character and you’ve got to get to know him not just on the tennis court but away from the court as well and I think that’s one big thing that’s helped our relationship," Hewitt said. “It’s not always easy coming in, stepping in and telling these guys what to do when you’re only working with them for a certain number of weeks.” “I got to know Nick away from tennis, I got to know how he handles different situations especially stressful ones under pressure and that’s only helped us.” “I think at the end of the day Nick had to know that these guys are there to help him and they’ve got his back no matter what happens… that gives Nick the self belief to go out there and get the job done knowing he’s got these guys behind him that are fully committed to him.” Kyrgios is currently without a coach and Hewitt doesn't think the World No.17 will be in any rush to get a new one.
“When Nick does find the right person, I don’t think it will be a full-time gig," Hewitt said. "He’s the kind of guy that needs a little bit of space." ALSO READ Lleyton Hewitt: I LOVE HAVING NICK KYRGIOS IN MY TEAM, HE LIFTS TEAM STANDARDS!
