Juan Martin del Potro looked for many coaches this year before hiring his fellow compatriot Sebastin Prieto. Since he started working with Prieto, the 2009 US Open champion reached the semi-finals at the US Open and Shanghai Masters, the Basel final, the Paris Masters' quarter-finals and successfully defended his Stockholm title.
Prieto is very satisfied with how their partnership has started. 'He is a very calm person, relaxed day-by-day, but focused and strict with himself when it comes to work. He is a top player in terms of work ethic and mental status. He set goals, built a team, and good results help to keep motivated. We only worked for two months, starting at US Open, preparing for the last Grand Slam of the year. Then we trained in Buenos Aires for a week, and we travelled for the last swing,' Prieto told Tenis Zone.
Looking ahead to the 2018 season, he added: 'I think the goal is that he can be healthy physically and is able to compete in a good form for the whole year. The upcoming pre-season is important, as it is a good base for the whole season. He should play like he did in recent times, for the whole year.'
