World No. 107 Roberto Carballes Baena surprised himself by reaching the Quito final. The Spaniard beat Slovakia's Andrej Martin in the semi-finals after creating a comeback 4-6 6-3 6-2 to reach his maiden ATP final. Carballes Baena had to beat USA's Ernesto Escobedo in a qualifying match in order to make the Quito main draw.
The 24-year-old Spaniard beat Italy's Federico Gaio and Paolo Lorenzi and Chile's Nicolas Jarry before he defeated Martin. Carballes Baena collected his first win of the season in Quito, having lost in the Pune first-round and the opening round of the Australian Open qualifying.
